Tarantella – EsqueletosSpiders, skeletons, sickness and politics: at first sight Tarantella doesn’t look like the most cheerfulband of America. But the tarantella (an Italian dance) could save people from the perilous bite of thetarantula. So Tarantella is absolutely the band that can heal this serious matter from their unpleasant consonance. The beginners of Tarantella, Kal Cahoone and John Rumley, say a lot about what Esqueletos (theSpanish word for ‘skeletons’) sounds like. John Rumley is from Denver and plays in countryband SlimCessna’s Auto Club. Kal Cahoone, the front woman, grew up in California and Colorado, but has an Italian grandmother and an Argentinean lover (the composer Christian Basso). So, think of pure americana and the mysterious Denver-sound that also characterizes Jay Munly, Sixteen Horsepowerand Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. This music melts without fear together with South European and SouthAmerican music: the tarantella, the bolero, the tango etcetera. The songs ‘Esqueletos’ and ‘Dark horse’ sound like a wink to the tarantella itself. This vertebrate dance is often performed in a circle, with lots of brakes and accelerations that surprise you all the time.At the same time these songs sound like an extravagant black and white western. Just as obstinate, but more accessible are ‘A chi sa dove Sara’ and ‘Elder tree’. These songs give you a little rest between the more complicated songs. Tarantella sounds excellent when the songs are fast, they’re sparkling and danceable. At the more quiet moments you miss the variation of the first songs of the album a bit. On the other hand the cover song ‘Un año de amor’ from the Spanish singer Luz Casal has a very strong melody and is performed in a subtle and sensitive way. ‘Dame fuego’, officially the last song, is asurprising and varied trip that is modest, secretly rocking and a little bit Mexican. And there is a second surprise: there are two bonus tracks. The voice of Kal Cahoone sounds mysteriously just like the music and a little bit nonchalant. It does think of the alternative, gothic and new wave sound of Siouxsie & The Banshees, but also of the sensitive voice of Karen Peris from The Innocence Mission. Tarantella is at the same time serious and experimental, fresh and sultry. The different styles combine so well, as if there was never something else. The arty booklet (with a drawing of for example the Argentinean artist Bedoya) makes the entire album almost brilliant. Tarantella is a very well medicine for every bite.

A CHI SA DOVE SARA-lyrics by Kal Cahoone

I will circle you
all the way home
lead the way loved one
look up and turn around
round and round I go
you’re sweet as honey
or at least you used to be

a chi sa dove sara
a chi sa dove sara
a chi sa do ve sa do ve a chi sa do ve sara
a chi sa dove sara
a chi sa dove sara
you're sweet as honey

or at least you used to be
or at least you used to be
or at least you used to be
